10 Great Kid-Friendly Summer Activities!

Now that school is out, you better have a list of things to do with the kids this summer! Here are ten fun activities to keep in your back pocket that are sure to please the whole family!

 

SPEND A DAY IN THE MUSEUM

Yakima Valley Museum Children’s Underground encourages your children’s imagination to grow with their child-sized replicas of period building and costumes.  Situated on the edge of Franklin Park, which has a great new playground area, the Museum is adjacent to Franklin Pool, making it an ideal spot to spend a hot summer day! Get a hot dog or some yummy ice cream at the Museums 30’s style Soda Fountain and enjoy one of the many live concerts in the park!

 

WATCH A MOVIE OUTSIDE

Bring your lawn chair or blanket and have a picnic on the lawn while attending the free Outdoor Summer Cinema Series, Sunday evening movies in Chesterly Park. Movies start at 8:30pm.

  July 17 - Minions

  July 24 - Goosebumps

  July 31 - Million Dollar Arm

  August 7 - Top Gun

  August 14 - The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

  August 21 - Sponge Out of Water.

 

HIT THE ARCADE

Meadowbrook Family Fun Center is a great way to beat the heat! They’ve got bumper boats, miniature golf, batting cages, go karts, a video arcade and lots of delicious pizza!  You can spend all day there!

 

GET SOAKED

Water Spray Parks are a great way for the kids to cool off. Visit Martin Luther King Park at S. 8th St and E. Beech, or Miller Park at N. 4th St and K. “E” Street.  Both are a great place to spend a fun-filled day with the whole family!

 

BIKE THE GREENWAY

Bicycle the Yakima Greenway and stop to play at Mcguire Park, a wooden play structure with swings and towers and tire climbing and a labyrinth and so much more!  What a great way to burn off all that summer-time energy!

 

GO FOR A RUN

Everyone can race in the Howling at the Moon 5k! Whether you “Run, Walk or Zombie Shuffle” on Friday, July 22, the whole family is sure to have fun! There will be food, beverages and a movie after the run. Adult -16 and older are $30, and youth - 5 to 15 are $15. Child - 4 and under are $10.

 

HEAD TO THE FARM

Bring the kids for a farm experience, picking farm fresh fruit. Visit Barrett’s Orchards during their 12th Annual Peach Days from August 5th through September 2nd for free samples of fresh peach smoothies, freshly picked peaches and nectarines, homemade ice cream with fresh peaches, or a peach milkshake! Bill’s Berry Farm Peach Festival is on the first two Fridays and Saturdays in August. Every weekend at Bill’s enjoy the two big playgrounds, hayrides, animal farm, barnyard train, apple slingshots and donuts!

 

SHOOT SOME HOOPS

Hot Shots 3-on-3 Basketball Tourney is coming August 27th and 28th. All grades, from 1st to 12th are invited to play! Bring your game to the streets of Downtown Yakima and prove that you have what it takes to become a Hot Shots Champion!

 

JUMP AROUND

Visit Get Air to burn off that energy at the indoor trampoline park with foam pits, dodgeball, kid’s zone, free jump trampolines and dunk hoop. Open during the summer from 10 am – 10 pm Sunday-Thursday, and Friday and Saturday from 10 am – 12 am.

 

CATCH A FLICK

Going to the movies at the Yakima Theaters is always a great way to cool off! Get your nachos, hot dog and popcorn, then settle in to be entertained. There are two family friendly theaters to choose from, The Majestic and Yakima Cinema, and an over-21 only theater where you can enjoy an adult beverage and have a meal brought out to you during the show!
